How to Train a Dog Not to Chew Everything?

January 16 2021

It's totally natural for adult dogs to bite and, if given a toy, will usually enjoy gnawing for several hours. While puppy chewing is normal as their teeth are still coming in, this is not always painful like it is for adults. Puppy chewing could be a sign of several things including teething, anxiety, separation anxiety and boredom. A dog might also begin to chew because he has been spayed or neutered. He may feel the urge to make himself comfortable and start chewing away. If you see your dog starting to gnaw on something then you should take him to his vet to find out what could be causing it.

Toys could be the cause of a dog chewing while you are away at work or traveling. Create a fun environment for him by giving him toys to play with. Toys that he can "break" are great because he will have fun with them and they provide him with something good to chew on. If he does not have toys to play with then you should consider getting him some cat toys or other types of toys that he can "break" to.

Separation Anxiety It's a feeling that all dog owners suffer when their pet is left alone. Dogs who are left alone in the house tend to become nervous and bored and they start to chew on things to keep themselves busy. This is normal and these dogs are usually only a little restless. If your dog seems to be bored, then he needs some company and maybe an afternoon walk. If your dog is chewing on things because he is bored, then he probably suffers from separation anxiety. Be sure to give your dog plenty of attention and play with him every chance you get.

Teething Puppies will need to be supervised when they are young if they are to prevent them from chewing on anything they can get their teeth on. A toy will help here, but it will also help with other skills as well. Teach your baby to roll over and other tasks like that using a toy. By doing this, he won't think twice about what you are doing and he will keep his teething toys away from the couch, the remote controls, or any other place where he might chew. When you supervise him while he is teething, be sure to keep his toys in a safe place outside of his reach.

Make Sure He Has Food And Water While He Chews On Stuff Make sure that he always has food and water available for him. Dogs love to snack but don't feed him too often because he may get the idea that he needs to chew more. If you are going to leave food and water out for your puppy, try not to leave them out in plain view where he can get them. Instead, put them in the freezer, put a sign on them like "no chewing allowed" and close the door to his crate or pen so he knows not to get them.

Make A Safe Place For Him To Relax And Enjoy He may chew when you are asleep but having a comfortable place to relax is much better than having a chew toy. So figure out what is best for him to do when you are not around. If you're at work all day, a crate would be a great choice. If you are at home, put him in his crate during the day and let him out to go potty or run around. If you cannot leave him in his crate all day, then make sure he has some sort of a safe place to relax during the day.

The second rule is to never ever punish your dog for chewing on something. No matter how much you yell at him, he won't stop! This is the third most important rule. If you are having a hard time getting him to stay in his crate or pen, just ignore him. He will chew on something eventually. You don't have to punish him for doing this, just ignore him until he stops.
